The Nature Conservancy - Virginia (Charlottesville)
The Virginia GIS Manager oversees the GIS program for The Nature Conservancy in Virginia and provides geospatial expertise to Conservancy staff and partners in Virginia and in other state and regional geographies. Develops GIS analyses, creates and manages geospatial data, and creates a diversity of static and dynamic (web-based) cartographic products and services to support all aspects of the Conservancy’s work (including in government relations, marketing and communications, and philanthropy) in landscape programs, the state, whole systems and across larger regions. Develops and implements geospatial data management methods and systems to maintain and curate a wide range and volume of GIS data. Works with the Conservation and Geospatial Systems team and GIS Managers in neighboring states to manage GIS data and workflows on the Conservation GeoCloud. Supports GIS users in multiple state offices and in other locations as needed, troubleshooting issues and updating software when needed. Serves as Virginia liaison to the Conservation and Geospatial Systems team regarding the distribution and maintenance of GIS-related software and licenses and for other Conservancy-wide GIS issues as needed. Maintains and edits the Virginia component of TNC Lands in ArcGIS Online, a comprehensive database of Conservancy managed lands in Virginia (including associated metadata), contributes to a regional geodatabase of all conservation lands, and responds to outside requests for these or other Conservancy GIS data. • Builds practical geospatial solutions and workflows to support conservation, land protection and stewardship, fundraising, communications, and policy teams. • Designs and performs spatial analyses to meet the needs of teams across Virginia in support of conservation strategies or projects. • Manages, produces, aggregates and publishes geospatial datasets. • Creates engaging maps for a variety of audiences in both print and digital formats. • Convenes and communicates effectively with a diverse group of people, including conservation practitioners, policy advisors, fundraising staff, and communications professionals, and others with varying knowledge of GIS, to obtain and provide needed information in response to map, data, and analysis needs/requests. • Engages and builds relationships with external partners, including government agencies and conservation organizations, in developing and implementing geospatial analyses. • Ensures integrity of data collection and creates metadata and documentation. • Provides technical training and troubleshooting with GIS software and data to other GIS users in Virginia • May negotiate and contract with vendors. • Must be willing and able to travel and present the work of the Conservancy and partners to diverse audiences.
Required Qualifications:
• MS or BS degree and certification in Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Biology, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management or related field and 5 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Experience managing, maintaining and creating geospatial databases. • Advanced experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (including Esri products) for analyzing and managing data and creating maps • Experience with interpretation of image analyses, complex spatial analyses, data modeling and landscape scenario analyses • Experience coordinating and working with cross functional teams to identify and achieve desired outcomes • Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize and manage multiple projects • Experience interpreting results and effectively and compellingly communicating (verbally and in writing) geospatial information with a wide range of people • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken, and graphical means in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced expertise in the use of Geographic Information Systems (e.g., Esri ArcGIS Pro and extensions, ArcGIS Online, geodatabases, etc.), and field data collection tools (e.g., through dedicated devices or smartphone apps). Proven aptitude in Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online (including publishing data and building web map applications). • Excellent cartography skills and experience creating cartographic and spatial data visualization products for static and dynamic (Internet-based) map applications that adhere to TNC’s cartography guidelines and visual identity. • Demonstrated experience in spatial data management, including metadata and documentation. • Working knowledge of current trends and practices in spatial analysis tools and methods. • Well versed in geospatial sciences best practices, and an ability to adapt them to TNC’s organizational needs and culture. • Working knowledge of drone data collection and analysis techniques. • Experience working with LiDAR data. • Working knowledge of relevant scripting and programming languages (e.g. Python, R). • Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization and with program partners. • Ability to incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion and justice considerations into conservation work and GIS analyses • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. • Aptitude for managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources and meeting deadline while delivering quality results. • Experience with field data collection.
