Senior Marine Engineer / Naval Architect

MAPC has an opening for a full time (40hr/wk) Marine Engineer or Naval Architect with an interest in unique vessel and ship system designs to work on diverse projects across the company portfolio. The preferred candidate will be capable of working with multi-disciplinary project teams as a subject matter expert and as a leader of such teams. Typical ship design work extends from concept studies through preliminary and contract design. Products include arrangements, powering and propulsion studies, weight and stability considerations, shipwide trade studies, and seakeeping studies on vessels from tens to hundreds of feet long. Marine systems work includes modifications to and service of existing systems in production at / by MAPC; auxiliary systems concept, preliminary, and detail design and arrangement; and development of novel equipment and components for challenging marine environments. MAPC is seeking a candidate who has existing knowledge and skills supporting many of these tasks and an interest in expanding their knowledge to solve novel problems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following engineering elements: 1. Solving complex technical problems with advice and guidance from Principal Engineers when necessary. 2. Independent solving of straightforward technical problems 3. Moving freely between first principles analysis and complex software “canned” solution analysis. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each and knowing when and where to use them. 4. Having an intuition of when a technical problem is converging positively and when to change approach for better results. 5. Developing and assessing options to resolve technical challenges and identifying impacts, risks, and benefits for each solution across the design. 6. Documenting and communicating technical determinations at the appropriate level of detail and explanation for internal, external, specialist, and intelligent non-specialist consideration. Team leadership roles include: 1. Business and proposal development, 2. Establishing and performing to cost and schedule metrics, 3. Forming internal and external teams, 4. Providing technical leadership and oversight, and 5. Seeking opportunities to further develop projects. MAPC has offices in Baltimore, Maryland and Brunswick, Maine. We are seeking a candidate who would be working primarily from the Brunswick, Maine location. Qualifications Necessary • Fifteen or more years of relevant experience. • Firm understanding and demonstrated application of the following components of Naval Architecture: o Hydrostatics o Arrangements, from the location of watertight bulkheads to the arrangement of equipment and components within spaces. o Intact and damaged stability, ideally with experience with both commercial and Naval standards and software. o Applications of customer or IACS rules and requirements, including ABS, DNV, USN, and USCG rules. Familiarity with the practical application of IACS and customer requirements to ship design and construction. • Experience in the use of the following software tools and an understanding of their capabilities and limitations. Candidates with experience in similar programs (e.g., PTC Creo in lieu of SolidWorks) are encouraged to apply. o SolidWorks o GHS o Microsoft Office products • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a focus on documentation • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, and / or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited school. • An ability to travel on an occasional basis. The expected level of travel would be roughly 30 days per year subject to increase or decrease depending upon business needs. Applicants should be able to board and traverse boats and ships. • US citizenship and the ability to receive a security clearance. Preferred • Experience in the study of hydrodynamics, including resistance, maneuvering, and seakeeping considerations. The ideal candidate will have experience with both commercial and Naval standards and software. • Experience in the use of the following software packages is optional and beneficial: o AutoCad o NAVCAD o Rhino o Star CCM o USN ASSET o USN SHCP o Other commercial or Naval resistance / maneuvering / seakeeping software • Past shipboard or shipyard / repair facility assignment, as a civilian or in conjunction with US military service. • An existing security clearance.
