Hampden-Sydney College has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director and Superintendent of Grounds. Reporting to the Director of Facilities Management, the Assistant Director and Superintendent of Grounds (AD) is responsible for supporting the College mission by overseeing and managing all aspects of our campus’s groundskeeping operations, mechanized assets, and waste management. AD is responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans, maintaining the highest standards of landscape maintenance, and ensuring the efficient and effective management of all grounds-related activities. AD will work alongside and provide leadership and supervision to a team of arborists, horticulturalists, groundskeepers, and mechanics. May assume the role of Director of Facilities when the director is not on duty. Duties include: • Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for grounds maintenance, focusing on enhancing the overall appearance, functionality, and sustainability of the grounds. • Oversee and assist all aspects of landscape maintenance, including planting, pruning, fertilization, irrigation, weed control, pest management, and turf care, ensuring that all work is performed to the highest standards. • Direct and assist with the cleaning and maintenance of lawns, walkways, entrances to buildings, driveways, and patio areas by sweeping, blowing, washing down and shoveling including snow removal and storm damage. • Maintain and repair parking areas, roads, curbs, and walkways. • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and local codes. • Develop and manage the groundskeeping budget. • Evaluate and implement sustainable practices, such as water conservation, waste reduction, and integrated pest management.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications: Bachelors in Horticulture or Landscape Architecture or a related field required along with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license. • Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a related field, with a track record of successful project management and team leadership. • Strong knowledge of plant species, horticultural techniques, irrigation systems, and grounds maintenance equipment. • Proficiency in operating and maintaining landscaping tools and machinery. • Excellent leadership/supervisory and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse team effectively. • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced environment. • Exceptional organizational and time management abilities, with the capacity to prioritize tasks, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. • Must be physically fit and capable of performing strenuous outdoor work in various weather conditions. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with team members, management, and external vendors. • Greenhouse operations and trail maintenance expertise preferred. • Additional certifications or qualifications in horticulture, landscaping, or related fields are preferred.
