What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? As a Library Technician, in the Libraries department you will be the first point of contact to library patrons. You will provide excellent customer service while checking in and out library materials, issuing library cards, providing account information, answering telephones, and answering basic reference questions for patrons. You will manage the Automated Materials Handling System and assist patrons on library technology and equipment to include computers and Maker Space equipment. You will assist with preparation of library programs and events. In addition, you may act as a Passport Acceptance Agent and Notary Public. For this position, we are looking for strong in person customer service, cash handling and technology experience. How much money can I make? In the Library Technician position, you could make a competitive salary of $15.75 - $25.34 per hour! The salary range will vary depending on the level of education and experience. There is room for advancement with this position depending on education and experience. What are the qualifications for this position? This position requires: • 2 years of college in related field; AND • 1-2 years of related library experience OR • An equivalent combination of education and experience. An acceptable background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable sex offender registry check will also be required. Why should I work for the City of Newport News? Grissom Library Hours of operation: • 10:00 am – 9:00 pm Monday - Thursday • 10:00 am – 6:00 pm Friday & Saturday • 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm Sundays Availability on evenings, Saturdays and Sundays is required for this position. Special events occur around the local area and there are opportunities for outreach within the community during these events. In a part-time status, you will work 20 to 28 hours per week.
