The City of Newport News is looking for experienced HEAVY EQUIPTMENT OPERATORS with at least 2 years of experience with backhoes, skid steers, small excavators, small end loaders or similar equipment and worked in utility construction, or with water distribution lines or underground utilities or equivalent. Equipment Operator, Senior: Guaranteed Starting Salary: $49,920 ($24.00 per hour) Equipment Operator, Master: Estimated Hiring Range: $52,000 or higher ($25.00 per hour or higher based on experience) The City of Newport News is hiring for experience heavy equipment operators and who have: - At least 2 years of experience with backhoes, skid steers, small excavators, small end loaders or similar equipment - Worked in utility construction, or with water distribution lines or underground utilities What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? Do you have experience operating a backhoe, excavator, milling machine, front-end loader, skid steer, tandem and single-axle dump trucks, tractor with bushhog attachments, and/or sewer cleaner vactor? Are you looking for variety in a day’s work? How would you like operating jackhammers, pipe saws, concrete saws, portable air compressors, portable light plants, and portable arrow boards? Then look no more … we have the right job for you! Waterworks Department: You can assist with performing installation and scheduled and preventative maintenance on water distribution systems. There is a variety of work to include repairing water leaks for main lines, services and meters; assisting with directional boring, chlorination and disinfection, pressure testing, and inspecting water mains; performing flow checks and taking water samples; and assisting with water quality flushing and water main shut-offs. Public Works Department: You can assist in maintaining and repairing mainline stoppages; flushing and cleaning sanitary sewer laterals, mains, force mains and pump station wet wells. You would also read and interpret plan sketches, drawings, and plans of sanitary sewer structures and systems . These complex systems that you would support are critical infrastructures and necessary to ensure public health and safety. How much money can I make? Salaries will be compensated based on experience but will start at the following rates: • Senior Equipment Operator: $24.00 per hour; $49,920 annually • Master Equipment Operator: $25.00 per hour; $52,000 annually What are the qualifications for this position? • Senior Equipment Operator: Requires 2 years of work experience with Class II and Class III equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Master Equipment Operator: Requires 3 years of work experience with heavy equipment and some lead or supervisory experience; or a combination of education and experience.
