Seasonal Wildlife Technician Location: Martha’s Vineyard, MA Time Period: (April- October) Hours –40 hrs/week. Work days include weekends, holidays, and irregular hours. Application deadline: 2/25/2024 Position Description: BiodiversityWorks seeks an early career conservation professional to assist our staff with monitoring and research projects on a variety of wildlife species with a focus on beach nesting-birds and the island’s bat populations. Responsibilities include: (1) locating, monitoring, and protecting nesting pairs of piping plovers, least terns, and American oystercatchers, (2) bat acoustic surveys, assisting with mist netting, and potentially telemetry, (3) collecting color-band resight data for black skimmer and endangered roseate terns (4) Assisting with other various wildlife projects as needed (5) recording data in field notebook and electronic databases, (6) creating GIS/Google Earth maps from GPS data, (7) maintaining communication with supervisors, (8) participating in weekly meetings (9) creating a poster project and participating in our annual fundraising event, (10) working with and coordinating volunteers and interns, (11) assisting with data compilation and summary reports, and (12) other duties as required. Compensation: Pay dependent on experience ($19 – $21/hour), cell phone stipend ($25/mo) and mileage reimbursement. Housing is a shared room at the Hoft Farm Field Station.

Required Qualifications:

Requirements: o Must be at least 21 years of age and have a degree in wildlife biology, biology, ecology, or a related field. o Must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and a reliable vehicle. o Must be able to walk at least 1 mile in the sand while carrying up to 25 pounds and engage in strenuous outdoor work in summer weather – sometimes amidst biting insects (ticks, mosquitoes, flies). o Must be able to work independently and communicate regularly via text message and email. o Good public outreach and engagement skills. o Good communication, computer, and organizational skills. o Good team skills. o Must be willing to engage in humane box trapping or other capture methods for lethal control of a limited number of skunks and crows at nesting beaches. o A rabies vaccination is not required, but preference may be given to applicants who have or would be willing/able to get one prior to the field season.
