TNEI is seeking to recruit a bright and enthusiastic Power Systems Engineer III or Senior Engineer with experience working with US utilities and/or renewable energy project developers to solve complex power systems and interconnection problems. The role will involve feasibility studies, system impact studies and facility studies in support of the interconnection of generators to the grid, project engineering, and strategic and regulatory support to clients including utilities, developers and system operators. The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy, and the employee must be able to develop advanced skills and work independently with limited supervision. An Engineer III effectively applies power systems concepts, procedures and software simulation tools to work that is progressively complex and varied. The Senior Engineer will manage power system work with minimal supervision. The employee is expected to develop advanced skills and work independently with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. The Senior Engineer is fully competent in the use of power system concepts, industry and company procedures, and power system simulation software. The Senior engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes actions to resolve them. Duties and responsibilities will include: • Perform studies and project engineering work, including high-level costing, for renewable energy projects including on/offshore wind, solar and storage. • Supporting renewable energy developers with the interconnections process; beginning from early site finding / grid feasibility stages, pre-application discussion with the network operators, grid connection applications and offer reviews, assisting with curtailment assessments, through to the management of the compliance process on behalf of the client; and supporting them through the post-connection process including commissioning and testing. • Coordination with Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), Independent System Operators (ISOs), State regulatory agencies, and utilities on behalf of developers, both pre-application and post-offer, attend project meetings and teleconferences as required to progress the client’s agenda. • Electrical power system analysis including power system modelling and performance assessment for design confirmation and protection studies, high level constraint analysis, and high-level network connection assessments. This includes utilizing tools such as DIgSILENT Power Factory, PSS/E, IPSA, ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-ATP, SKM to perform feasibility, system impact and facility studies to assess a planned project’s impact on the grid. • Electrical designs that are required to certify the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG), support structure, offshore platform, and subsea power cables. This may include performing independent calculations / spot-checks of electrical design, e.g. ampacity, arc flash etc. • Analysis and protection coordination of existing and proposed power networks supplying renewable, offshore, industrial and utility projects. • Technical solutions to customers that may involve system or equipment design or upgrades, testing of equipment, solutions relating to increase safety, reliability, or efficiency. • Technical due diligence, management of connection studies (grid code compliance), delivering training sessions, power systems analysis, engineering tasks within the broader field of engineering, and acting as Owner’s Engineer or Technical Advisor. • Co-ordinate and actively take up business development with clients.
