JUVENILE SERVICES "YOUTH JUSTICE DIVERSION PROGRAM" INTERNSHIP (UNPAID) What work would I do? This internship will be packed full of opportunity to learn, develop, and grow your human services skills and be an agent of change for youth! You will be participating specifically in the Department of Juvenile Services and be working right alongside our Youth Justice Diversion (YJDP) and Assessment Center Program Coordinators and Staff to assist them with daily functions and ongoing projects for the department! What would a typical day on the job be like? Day-to-day, you will be working closely with the Staff to learn the full purpose of the programs and utilize all the tools available to assist clients. The YJDP and Assessment Center is an essential part of Juvenile Services’ Community Based Programs as they offer an array of services and activities to the youth in the City of Newport News and provides intensive staff-to-youth supervision. Some administrative work will be required to include learning documentation processes, polices, terminology and reviewing common program paperwork. In addition to your day-to-day responsibilities, this internship will give you the opportunity to learn as much as you are willing to invest. What type of schedule will I work, and how long will the internship be? The schedule for this internship will be from June to August 2024. There will be flexibility, as we realize your classes come first! There could also be potential for a part-time or a full-time job opportunity at the end of the internship if the City has vacancies at that time. What would some attainable goals be for me over the course of the internship? The Department of Juvenile Services would like an intern to accomplish the following objectives over the course of the internship: • Conducting initial and ongoing interviews with court participants • Initiating and processing required case/court documentation • Provide orientation YJDP and Assessment Center clients What types of degree programs would be best be suited for this internship? Students currently enrolled in a graduate or ungraduated degree program in Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice Social Work, or a related degree will see the most value from this internship! What are the qualifications for this internship? This internship will require basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Communication skills will be essential both orally and in writing, and you must be dependable and professional.
