CERTIFIED POLICE OFFICER – NNPD What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of everyone in our community? As a Certified Police Officer for the Newport News Police Department, you will perform a variety of duties in the areas of law enforcement and crime prevention. You may be assigned to any functional areas- to include patrol, investigations, or administration. This role involves providing public assistance for non-criminal activities like traffic accidents, street hazards and collaborating with the community to address issues. You will also be patrolling and responding to various criminal activities such as homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, property crimes, domestic violence, narcotics, and juvenile crimes. The job entails pursuing and apprehending suspects, making arrests (which may involve physical restraint or deadly force), interviewing victims and witnesses, protecting crime scenes, and processing suspects. The role also involves administrative duties like preparing court testimony, training, maintaining case files, and completing forms and reports. How much does this position pay? Police Officer - Requires a minimum of a high school or general diploma and at least one (1) year of credited service as a Police Officer, First Level or equivalent in accordance with departmental policy. A satisfactory criminal background check and motor vehicle check are required for this position.
