What type of work will I be doing? As an intern for the Department of Engineering - Transportation Division, you will spend your time learning the facets of the Transportation field. On-the-job training will be provided. An internship with the Transportation Division may include the preparation of Grant Applications. The Transportation Division is the recipient of various state and federal grants for Transportation infrastructure. The City of Newport News strives to provide safe and connected vehicular, bike, and pedestrian safety. Tasks may include helping to develop and submit safety studies, including pulling crash data, analyzing that data to identify problem areas, and then recommending improvements to mitigate those issues. Tasks may also include bike and pedestrian usage count data collection to support new grant requests, streetlight outage audits, creating contractual documents, conducting site visits, and assisting with data entry, and fieldwork. There are times you may be out in the field collecting data or observing a variety of conditions. An online driving training course administered by the City must be passed to be able to utilize the City’s motor pool vehicles.
Required Qualifications:
What are the qualifications for this position? This internship requires effective communication skills, both verbally and written. The ability to work independently with strong situational awareness is vital for safety during fieldwork. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software is necessary, and a satisfactory driving record is a must. What type of degree program would be best suited for this internship? Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or Computer Science.
