This position manages an external contract for operations services and is responsible for other projects and initiatives within the public realm. This individual must have a passion for downtowns, with a focus on placemaking, an insatiable curiosity and an eye for detail. The position requires the ability to multi-task, problem solve and work well with both colleagues and downtown constituents. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES Essential functions of the Public Realm Manager include but are not limited to the following: · Manage the services of the vendor for DNC Operations (Clean & Safe Program), including overseeing the budget and annual contract for staffing and equipment. · Coordinate placemaking initiatives such as street furniture, public art, landscaping and other public amenities in the right of way. · Oversee public spaces managed by DNC, including The Plot and Downtown Dog Park. · Manage holiday decoration and building illumination program for Downtown Norfolk. · Support special events hosted by DNC, including staging of equipment, reviewing permits and logistical planning. · Order, maintain and oversee capital equipment for both the administrative and operations teams. · Collect and analyze data relevant to the public realm. · Follow active construction and capital improvement projects in Downtown Norfolk and share relevant information with staff and stakeholders. · Offer proactive and creative solutions to district issues within the public realm. · Facilitate partnerships and working relationships with City of Norfolk departments and other agencies and community organizations. · Serve as staff to board of director-driven committees. · Conduct research regarding public space trends impacting downtowns. · Provide excellent customer service to all downtown stakeholders. · Perform other tasks as may be assigned by the President & CEO.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban studies, landscape architecture, public administration, or related field is preferred but not required.
