This position is for an experienced Structural/Building Envelope Engineer responsible for evaluating existing building conditions and developing repair and rehabilitation solutions within the individual’s area of technical expertise. The role emphasizes technical assessment, repair design, proposal development, client coordination, and oversight of construction-phase services. The individual will serve as a primary technical contributor on assigned projects and is expected to exercise independent judgment in evaluating existing conditions, developing repair concepts, preparing proposals and fee estimates, and supporting projects through permitting and construction. Depending on background and licensure, work may involve structural systems, façades, balconies, exterior wall assemblies, roofing, waterproofing systems, and related components. The position includes responsibility for developing client relationships and generating new work within the firm’s structural engineering and building envelope consulting practice. This includes identifying project opportunities, preparing proposals, and supporting business development through technical competence, client service, and repeat work rather than dedicated sales activities. Depending on licensure and experience, the individual may act as engineer-of-record for select projects or serve as a lead technical consultant. The position reports to principal level staff and does not require formal staff management. The remote nature of this position requires the ability to work independently, manage projects with minimal supervision, and coordinate effectively with clients and project teams across locations. Primary Responsibilities: Collaborates with internal team, contractors, and owners to provide effective problem-solving and deliver solutions that meet the client’s budget and schedule Possesses effective organizational and time management abilities, enabling thoughtful prioritization to achieve immediate and long-range goals. Ability to identify and manage changes in scope. Responsible for developing structural analysis and design calculations, along with related drawings and specifications, for assigned projects Works collaboratively with the structural team on commercial, institutional, multi-family, and mixed-use projects using a range of structural systems including concrete, steel, and wood. Conduct construction administration services including permit drawing creation, response to requests for information, and periodic construction site observation Perform surveys and evaluations for transition and reserve studies

Required Qualifications:

Candidates may be qualified through a primary background in structural engineering or building envelope consulting, with demonstrated experience in existing-building evaluation and repair. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, or Architectural) or a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution. Ability to obtain professional engineering (PE) licensure within 2 years. Active PE License in candidate’s residing state preferred. 6–12 years of professional experience in structural engineering consulting and/or building envelope consulting, with an emphasis on existing buildings. Demonstrated experience performing building evaluations, developing repair or rehabilitation designs, and supporting projects through construction. Experience preparing technical proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates, and generating repeat or follow-on work through client relationships. Ability to work independently in a remote environment while managing multiple concurrent projects and meeting deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and direct communication with clients and contractors. Willingness and ability to perform site investigations, meetings, and construction observation within the Washington, DC region. Experience with structural or building envelope evaluation of existing multi-family, commercial, and institutional buildings. Familiarity with façade systems, balconies, exterior wall assemblies, roofing, waterproofing systems, or structural systems, consistent with the candidate’s discipline. Experience in construction administration, including submittal review, site observations, payment application review, responding to RFIs, among others. Experience developing and reviewing opinions of probable construction cost (cost estimates) for building envelope and structural repairs, including budget-level and construction-phase pricing evaluations. Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience coordinating drawings and technical details with drafting.
