The Manager of Membership & Communications of the Virginia Forestry Association (VFA) is responsible for membership acquisition and retention, onboarding of new members, and management of affinity business programs to support VFA’s member value proposition. The Manager is responsible for general marketing, communications, and branding for the Association, the management of association publications, and the maintenance of the association’s website and other electronic communications. This position also supports the Virginia Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s (SFI) State Implementation Committee. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Member Acquisition and Retention • Understand and effectively communicate the value of VFA membership to distinct audiences throughout Virginia’s forestry community. • Develop and implement VFA membership acquisition strategies, including engagement with potential members, prospect list development, prospect tracking and collateral development. • Track and report progress of acquisition and retention plans, including development longer-range initiatives to ensure sustainability of membership growth. Member Services • Manage member onboarding process, including populating contact forms and applications, disseminating new member contact information, and entering contacts into database. • Regularly communicate with existing members to further define their needs and provide focused information about how VFA can assist them. • Develop and manage member programs and services, including affinity programs and annual member directory. Communications and Brand Management • Create and implement overall association marketing, communications and branding strategy, including the creation of marketing plans and timelines. • Create and implement marketing and communications strategy for VFA programs, events, and initiatives. • Develop association marketing and communication pieces, including press and photo releases, feature articles, scripts, editorials, and promotion pieces. Advertising Sales • Create and execute advertising sales strategy and recommending appropriate policies to ensure mutually beneficial relationships with VFA and interested parties. • Maintain media kit/rate card for VFA advertising opportunities, including on-going development of targeted advertisers contact list for solicitation. Publications • Oversee publication of quarterly Virginia Forests magazine, working with volunteer leaders and outside vendors in its preparation and distribution. • Coordinate development and publication of annual membership directory. • Coordinate onsite program development for association events and other published material production elements within budget and established deadlines. Website/e-Communications • Serve as editor of bi-weekly VFA Voice e-newsletter, including preparation and distribution. • Develop and maintain VFA website, ensuring that the website promotes current and accurate information about association programs, events, and initiatives. • Maintain and further develop the association’s presence on social media. Virginia SFI State Implementation Committee Coordinator • Support planning and coordination of the SIC’s activities and events. • Field incoming requests from prospective or current program participants, ensuring timely and accurate communication with SFI-SIC stakeholders. • Maintain accurate program-related information including websites, program materials, databases, and paper records. Recommends procedures for improved program performance and increased program efficiency. • Maintain budget and track expenditures/transactions, support program invoicing process and program accounting functions. • Manage required annual compliance reporting for SFI, maintaining appropriate level of record keeping and documentation.

Required Qualifications:

A four-year college degree in a relevant field of study required. Two to four years of professional experience required. Background and/or interest in forestry strongly preferred, but not required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to organize work and to work as part of a team. Naturally adept at prioritizing, setting, and meeting deadlines while working on multiple projects and tasks. Attention to detail a must. Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to establish and maintain effective relationships. Knowledge of a diverse spectrum of marketing communications elements including message development, writing, collateral development, direct marketing, digital communications, and publications preferred.
