What you will be doing: The Northern Regional Office is seeking applicants with environmental or engineering backgrounds through education or experience to provide permitting support for the DEQ’s Air Permitting Programs; prior experience not necessary. The position will primarily process air permit applications under the New Source Review and Title V Programs and provide assistance to the Air Compliance section of DEQ. DEQ is tasked with carrying out the Clean Air Act and the Air Pollution Control Law of Virginia. This position aids in DEQ’s goal of protecting the citizens of the Commonwealth by ensuring that air pollution sources in the Northern Virginia are properly evaluated and permitted in accordance with both State and Federal Regulations. This position reviews permit applications for regulatory applicability and drafts air emissions permits by preparing all necessary documents in a timely manner, with technical, regulatory and procedural accuracy, employing appropriate engineering practices and calculations, pollution control considerations, regulatory standards, and, where applicable, consideration of pollution prevention approaches; provides technical and administrative support to DEQ personnel and the public; participates in public outreach, meetings and hearings; assists with special assignments as needed; inspects sources and assists with compliance and enforcement; maintains and uses databases to support agency programs; and foster a collaborative work environment supportive of all agency program goals. Required Qualifications:
Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge, skills and/or abilities to include: environmental, mechanical or chemical engineering principles or equivalent; basic science regarding air pollution control; basic knowledge of ambient air modeling; evaluating and writing engineering analyses, permits, and correspondence; reading and implementing policies, guidelines, and regulations; performing mathematical calculations to evaluate air pollution emissions; oral and written communication skills; ability to make independent and sound decisions, work without close supervision, and to resolve problems independently and as a team; and must be sensitive to public attitudes and concerns while effectively carrying out the agency mission.
Preferred Qualifications:
Qualifications preferred but not required: Bachelor’s Degree in environmental engineering, natural or physical science, or related field. A combination of education, experience, and training may substitute for a degree.
